If you've tried talk therapy and still feel stuck, EMDR may be the missing piece in your healing journey.
At Counseling Forward, we believe healing from trauma is possible, even when it feels out of reach. One of the most powerful tools in our practice is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, more commonly known as EMDR. For many of our clients across Texas, it has been a turning point.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy originally developed to help people process and heal from traumatic memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help the brain process painful experiences in a new way.
During an EMDR session, you are guided to bring up aspects of a difficult memory while simultaneously engaging in these gentle eye movements. This dual focus allows the brain to process the memory the way it would naturally, gradually reducing its emotional intensity. Over time, memories that once felt overwhelming begin to lose their grip.
Why EMDR Works
Trauma does not just live in your mind. It lives in your body, your nervous system, and your sense of self. Traditional talk therapy can be deeply helpful, but sometimes words are not enough to reach the places where trauma hides.
EMDR works differently. By directly targeting the emotional charge tied to traumatic memories, it can facilitate healing that talk therapy alone may not reach. Many of our clients report meaningful reductions in distress after just a few sessions.
Beyond relieving symptoms, EMDR helps you develop a new relationship with your story. When traumatic memories are no longer overwhelmingly painful, you can begin to explore how those experiences have shaped you and choose new beliefs about yourself. Clients often describe feeling a greater sense of calm, improved emotional regulation, and a deeper confidence in their own resilience.
EMDR is effective for:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Complex trauma and childhood wounds
Anxiety and panic disorders
Phobias
Religious trauma
Grief and loss
Life-altering events
